1970:

• Passenger plate color: blue on white.

• Most plates this year do not have the "19" in the date, dissappearing between DBD & DJN.
• "10-18" & "18-32" Trailer plates are discontinued.
• Passenger plate color: black on white.

• Passenger plate color: green on white.
• Special plates are issued for attendees of the National Governor's Conference in Austin.
• "Combination" plates replace "Truck Tractor"
• "Disabled Vet" plates introduced. These plates were renewed with stickers for 73 & 74.

• Some plates use thinner, 1974-style dies.
• Passenger plate color: white on black.
• The Texas Legislature requires that license plates be made "renewable" by 1975.

• Some plates (TYPE 2) use thicker, 1975-style dies on galvanized steel. 
• The changeover on passenger plates occured between VGR & VHX.
• Passenger plate color: red on white.

• Texas adopts a multi-year registration system. From now on, stickers are used to revalidate passenger plates, instead of new ones being issued annually.
• Originally, these plates were intended to last 5 years.
• The new base plate originally features the lone star symbol;
• In September (at MMV) the star is changed (by act of Texas Legislature) to a small Texas silhouette.
• Plates before QQY have a "75" debossed in the right sticker box.
• "Mobile Home" plates replace "House Trailer".

1978:

• Texas adopts a "staggered" registration system. Depending on the sticker, plates are renewed at different times throughout the year instead of on March 31.
• Non-passenger plates dated 77 (expiring March, 78) are replaced with plates dated 79.
• Therefore very few dated 1978 plates exist. Only known are personalized, Fertilizer Truck (first year of issue), and Antique Auto (actually a 973 plate).
