- Plates begin having slots for renewable date tabs. No tabs were
ever issued, but the slots were not discontinued until 1960.

scooter plates (like motorcycle but smaller) issued,
possibly for this year only.

1955:
- Legislation is introduced to add the slogan, "Tremendous Texas"
to 1956 plates. The bill is rejected.
- Replacement
plates for truck, truck tractor, and trailer are black
on green (odd yrs.) or black on red (even years) until 1962.
Alternate color replacement plates exist into the 70's.
- New plate colors are experimented with. Prototypes exist in at
least 20 different color combinations.
- Plates late in the year (after from RA to RF) were of the longer
1956 size & design.

1956:
- Texas adopts the 6" x 12" standard plate size recommended by the
American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
- Use of the "stacked" prefix ends.
- "Consular
Official" plates introduced.
- Passenger plate color: yellow on black.

- After extensive study, the black & white color scheme is adopted.
- Plates also again feature a lone star in mid-registration (continued
until 1976, except, oddly, for 1965).
- The 2-letter prefix uses thinner dies.
