Passenger Plates

These are plates that are issued to passenger vehicles whose owners meet certain qualifications.
Amateur Radio Operator First Issued: 1954 Issued to holders of an amateur radio station license issued by the Federal Communications Commission and who operate receiving and transmitting mobile amateur radio equipment in a passenger car or a light truck. A person may register more than one vehicle equipped with mobile amateur radio equipment. Serial number is the radio call sign. Available as: disabled |

Disabled First Issued: 1986 (replaced disabled sticker) Used for passenger or light commercial vehicles operated by a permanently disabled person or operated primarily for the transportation of a disabled person. The registrant may optionally use a regular passenger plate with a wheelchair identification placard on the rear view mirror. Prior to 1993, Regular passenger plates with a "wheelchair" year sticker were the option. Available as: Personalized (first issued ????) From about 1982-84, the "Disabled" slogan was used for personalized plates in lieu of the wheelchair. Circa 1997, the plates do have a wheelchair. |

Peace Officer First Issued: 1995 Two plates issued to Peace Officers wounded in the line of duty or to their surviving spouse, parent or adult child. Available as: Personalized. disabled |

Professional Firefighter First Issued: 1994 Available to members of the Texas Association of Professional Firefighters for use on their personal vehicles. This is a "Private Nonprofit Organization License Plate". Available as: Personalized, Disabled (as of 9/03), motorcycle, trailer, travel trailer |

Volunteer Firefighter First Issued: 1984 Two plates issued for a passenger car or light truck owned by a certified member of a volunteer fire department. Available as: Personalized, disabled, motorcycle, trailer, travel trailer |
